Sarah Weddington, an attorney in the landmark Roe v. Wade case, has died, according to statements from friend and former student Susan Hays and U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett.Born in Abilene, Texas, in 1945, Weddington attended McMurry University before graduating from the University of Texas School of Law in 1967.before the Supreme Court
In 1971, the high court agreed to hear the case against Wade, who was enforcing the Texas abortion law that had been declared unconstitutional in an earlier federal district court case. Wade was ignoring the legal ruling and both sides appealed. She was also a professor at University of Texas at Austin for 28 years, where she taught courses on leadership and gender-based discrimination.
"While rightfully known for her remarkable victory and continued advocacy for reproductive freedom, I knew Sarah as a friend and fellow legislator who worked effectively for Austin," Doggett, a Democrat from Texas, said in a statement Sunday night. While it is less clear if there's a majority to end the right to abortion nationwide, the court's conservative justices expressed skepticism about the landmark Roe v. Wade decision.
