Opponents of military rule in Myanmar hold one of their biggest nationally coordinated protests in months, calling on people across the country to shut their businesses and stay at home on International Human Rights Day.

"But by showing their unity, the strike is a success for the people who are waging psychological warfare against the military dictatorship," he said.

Since Thursday, authorities had announced in some neighbourhoods that action would be taken against shops that close without an acceptable reason. A shopkeeper from the market in Muse in northern Shan state said the official Township Development Committee threatened over a loudspeaker on Friday morning that it would take action against closed shops.

Clever way to demonstrate that practically nobody supports the military

So they just stayed inside? Dumb. Didn't hurt anyone but themselves

We know what happens next

If everyone collectively stopped buying a product for a month; would send a message from the people.

I don't think this would be a good way of protest - it becomes a protest curfew.

If we had that much solidarity in the UK, or for that matter anywhere else, we might actually achieve something.

This is a really smart way to protest in my opinion. Kudos to everyone sticking to it as well.
