NYC lawmakers pass bill giving noncitizens right to vote

Only a potential veto from Mayor Bill de Blasio stood in the way of the measure becoming law, but the Democrat has said he would not veto it. It’s unclear whether the bill might face legal challenges.Councilman Francisco Moya, whose family hails from Ecuador, choked up as he spoke in support of the bill.

Noncitizens still wouldn’t be able to vote for president or members of Congress in federal races, or in the state elections that pick the governor, judges and legislators. “The bill we’re doing today will have national repercussions,” said the council’s majority leader, Laurie Cumbo, a Democrat who opposed the bill. She expressed concern that the measure could diminish the influence of African American voters.

This is the Democrats doing exactly what they are complaining the Republicans are doing. All politicians are dirty.

This policy is backed up by strong research. Local stakeholders should have a say in local issues. Permanent residents pay taxes, send their kids to school, and run businesses. Why shouldn't the local gov respond to them as well?

don't freak out! it's LEGAL immigrants only for local elections. can't vote for potus, state or fed congress. if you think about it, it makes sense.. After all they do actually, legally live within these communities, many have for a long time, but can't vote

There has to be a long game here with all of these attempts at mandates. They have to know courts will shoot it down.
