Review to consider how current law operates, but opinions on policy can be made

A review of the operation of the Termination of Pregnancy Act, which was introduced in 2018, will be confined to the operation of the existing regime and will not consider changes to the legislation surrounding terminations.

The law also permits termination to be carried out in cases where there is a risk to the life, or of serious harm to the health, of the pregnant woman, and where there is a condition present which is likely to lead to the death of the foetus either before or within 28 days of birth. He gave an example that during Covid -19, the requirement for a woman to attend a doctor had been altered to allow for a woman to consult their doctor online. It was, he said, an operational change that authorities might consider making permanent, but one that did not change the legislation under which terminations operated.

Separate to this, a request for tender for a chairperson to carry out research into the views of service providers has also been published on the Department of Health website.
