PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte's spokesman Harry Roque Jr. failed in his bid to secure a seat at the International Law Commission , receiving the least number of votes amid opposition mounted by human rights groups.In a statement on Saturday, Roque thanked the people who showed their 'unwavering' support for his nomination to the ILC, a body of experts who help develop and codify international law.'My candidature at the ILC was a challenging campaign throughout but we met it head-on.
Roque, whose ILC bid was met with strong opposition from Filipino lawyers, received the least number of votes among 11 candidates from the Asia-Pacific bloc seeking to be part of the eight-seat commission.He received just 87 votes out of 191 members during a voting held on Saturday .Garnering the top votes for the region and thus were elected as representatives were from India, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, China, South Korea, Cyprus, and Mongolia. They will serve a five-year term on Jan.
