A small keyhole implant to prevent stroke is the focus of a new Australian trial. 9News

Small implantable devices that plug a sac in the heart where clots are formed provide a safer alternative for patients who can't take blood thinners.

"The ability to give the patient a one stop fix where you don't have to worry about blood thinning is quite a game changer." It will be assessed as the first line of defence against stroke and compared to the use of newer blood-thinning agents. The global trial is recruiting 3000 patients and Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital is leading the Australian arm.
