As a former Christian who once believed abortions to be evil, and who is now convinced of the opposite, I have found heartbreaking, as so many have, the arguments about the Texas antiabortion law. It’s less that it’s devastating to, once again, have our core reproductive rights up for Supreme Court debate—though it is, utterly so—and it’s more that the people bent on overturningThat girl was deeply, joyfully Christian.
And I do miss Christ. I miss Him so much. I would like to be clear about that. The Christ I loved, the one who lifted up and valued the needy, suffering, poor, ill, and outcast: That Christ, He loved us not for our strength, not for temporal success, wealth, power, nor even virtue, but just because we were all children of God. Simply by merit of existing, we deserved a love without end.
For instance, I learned that U.S. politicians began focusing on abortion rights, on reproductive rights, fairly recently. It wasn’t until the 1970s that abortions started becoming a central voting issue for a lot of people:“right to life” language to the Republican platform, hoping to tempt Catholics away from the Democratic Party. Until then, Republicans belonged to the party of choice.
The Christ I knew and loved—and still love, really, since grief can be an obverse of love, love that has lost its object—cared, even more than He cared about everyone else, about the most vulnerable among us. I can see how that could be interpreted to mean He particularly cares about first-trimester fetuses, but He doesn’t really say anything about fetuses in the Bible I used to memorize.
