The man accused of lighting his former partner on fire has taken the stand for the first time during the trial, claiming his alleged victim poured fuel on herself before unwittingly igniting a flame.

"Violent episodes include wrestling, restraining her, throwing objects around the room," he said.He said the woman woke up in a bad mood on the morning of April 24, 2017.He also admitted he had used methamphetamine that morning, but was not sure if he had had any cannabis. It was this woman, he told the jury, that the pair would begin arguing about in the shed that night.

He told the jury she ended up with fuel on her clothes and so he asked the woman "to go and have a shower and get changed". As he began to describe the events that he alleges led to the woman's burns, the man became emotional."[The] ground caught fire because of the fuel. Me and her [were] both trying to tread it out. That's when she caught on fire.""[My] first reaction was to wrap myself around her to smother the fire and at the same time to try and pat the flames out," he said.
