The son of Australia’s first billionaire has become the face of a burgeoning independents movement some say heralds a tectonic shift in our political landscape. Their focus? Climate change. Their target? Disgruntled small-l liberals.

to mining billionaire Andrew Forrest. On the other, though, has been the growing profile of an estimated 30-plus activist groups.

Even the woman dubbed the godmother of the movement, Cathy McGowan, counsels caution. “I think there are probably 80 electorates [with groups] that are interested, and I would say there are about 10 to 15 active groups that seriously want to run a candidate, but there’s still only one candidate [announced],” she said in September. “It’s all still a work in progress.

Like Holmes à Court, those leading the campaigns which he is looking to back calculate that the climate-and-integrity-savvy constituents they’re after have been watching. “I mean, it’s lovely but it’s also three years too late, the international focus is on targets for 2030, 2035,” Kylea Tink tellsof the Coalition’s 2050 net zero target.

And in the case of the former Liberal supporters among them, hell-bent on unseating a party many say left them before they left it. “Essentially what you’ve got is traditional small-l liberals, who feel the party’s leadership and its policies no longer represent their values,” says former PM Malcolm“It’s people literally sending a message: ‘If you’re not prepared to endorse candidates with our values, or who can deliver on those values, we’ll pick ones that are.

He initially tried the party route, approaching his local member in Kooyong, Frydenberg, even joining the Treasurer’s Kooyong 200 Club fundraising group in early 2017. “I originally went to see him as a constituent, because I decided he would be around for a long time. He’s ambitious. He’s talented. Kooyong under [Frydenberg’s predecessor] Petro Georgiou had been a progressive, positive force within the party.

The candidate herself, too, is upfront that she voted for the moderate incumbent, Trent Zimmerman, at the last election. “I was hopeful,” Tink says. “I believed we could move forward. And then I’ve watched our government stall for three years and not get anything really truly significant for future generations done.” Which is what she sees as energising the network of independents, of which she is now the exemplar. “It’s like we’ve all been thinking, ‘They’ll work it out. They’ll sort it out.

It's hard to take Simon seriously. He neither has the skills of an engineer to tackle CC effectively or the discipline of a scientist to communicate the reality if the problem.

svm_sarah Corporate raider thank you

Just love the number of blank newly created profiles that have been set up to respond negatively to this. The LNP staffers have been busy this morning😂 The future is brighter with people like Simon around!

Excellent simonahac getting some more mainstream coverage! Congratulations on breaking through to so many who are looking for answers on climate change.

It's time for a change LNPCorruptionParty need to go

In it for the money that’s all.Never done a days work in his life.Thank his dad for that.

The rich will be the least effected by the 'tectonic shit' of delusional 'Climate/fossils energy response'

Abandoning ALP voters to the Greens (Monster Raving Loony Party)?

Love it. Great guy great initiative.

Starting to think this is our only hope, politically. Thankyou simonahac

Simon is brilliant.

simonahac thank you, you have my vote

Hey, SMH, I may actually read this. (I always check with my twitter bubble first and they seem ok with it).

Good on him

drkerrynphelps Great to see another independent candidate stepping up this morning steele4hughes

Children of the wealthy can afford to be idealists but therein lies a danger in itself.

Thanks simonahac - I’m another AISEC WA alumni! Wishing you well with climate200 - great initiative!

😳🙄 That's exactly what Australia needs, another multi millionaire elite, born with a silver spoon in his mouth, telling average Australian's how to live because of excess emissions polluting the planet ! catherine___c RealMarkLatham pm_live CampbellNewman LawyersCity

A great lesson how traditional political parties have failed. Well done simonahac for providing an alternative.

Sorry, but as nice a bloke as Trent Zimmerman is, he does not represent my views. The LNP is not listening, especially to women and continues to view climate as a political issue. That’s why for North Sydney I support KyleaTink

pharnzwurth Why does the SMH feel the need to include 'son of Australia's first billionaire'?

drkerrynphelps Thank you simonahac for doing this. This is important. 🙏

drkerrynphelps This is great. Now do victorklineTNL

simonahac excellent background story on you. It explains why an where you are coming from. It actually reminds me of our most successful government which was lead by Gillard. She harnessed different types and got change. Hope it could be done also under AlboMP

Lost spoilt child looking to find relevance.

Remote communities to trial new program replacing controversial 'work for the dole' schemeThe trial job-seeker program will focus on participants in remote locations, rewarding those in 'work-like' placements with supplementary payments of up to $190. I have been in and out of welfare for the last 15 years. Most of my work for the dole was in work crews picking up rubbish around my local parks 4 hours at the most less if it was hot. The whinging from some of the crew use to crack me up. Some people are just f**king lazy.
