Growing up in South Africa in the late 50s and 60s, Ian Urquhart saw up close the discrimination and denial of rights that people of colour suffered in his birthplace.
Mr Urquhart is co-owner of the Avoca Hotel, about an hour north-west of Ballarat, and among a group of regional Victorian business owners in the trial, which requires patrons to prove they are double-vaccinated to gain entry. In a regional Victorian Facebook group, one user posted a picture of the Avoca Hotel and exclaimed “medical segregation has arrived in the Pyrenees Shire”.Hotel management has received at least a dozen direct offensive messages and a handful of angry phone calls.
Mr Urquhart is grateful to the many people who have defended his business online and in person. He is encouraged by the high vaccination rates in his area, Pyrenees Shire, where more than 93 per cent of people aged 16 and over have had their first dose. “The result of the Premier’s announcement on 1 October this year is that medical apartheid will be commencing in Victoria in a few days time,” Mr Angus told the Parliament.
