The US embassy in El Salvador on Saturday slammed the judges’ ruling as unconstitutional and a blow to bilateral ties. In recent years, the relaxing of presidential terms limits in parts of Latin America has stirred concerns among Western officials about a gradual erosion of democracy. He has also pushed for bitcoin to become legal tender. This will start on September 7, reports said. The government announced that it would give $30 in free bitcoins to citizens who sign up for the national digital wallet, called Chivo, to promote the cryptocurrency.
Speaking to reporters at the US embassy on the edge of the capital San Salvador on Saturday evening, US charge d'affaires Jean Manes criticised the court’s decision, saying that allowing immediate re-election was “clearly contrary to the Salvadoran constitution”.
