OPINION: NZ must go further to reduce risk of future terror attacks

Another set of laws needing to be re-examined relate to how a Sri Lankan national who was a known high-level security risk managed to reside in New Zealand. This includes refugees. If compelling reasons of national security can be shown in a court of law with all appropriate safeguards, they too should be expelled.

This may be the biggest gap in our defences this time. But when the review is done, we must have zero tolerance for extremists, of any flavour, who represent a serious threat to national security. The attack was classified as an act of terrorism because it was done with the purpose of advancing an ideological, political, or religious cause that intended to cause terror in the country or force the government to change a position. The world has watched the influence of ISIS in Afghanistan.

The focus was primarily on New Zealand ISIS operatives overseas, but the influence in New Zealand was not invisible.

Was there another attack?

Cut immigration

Another politically conservative dude loses his mind and attacks everyone. This is why the far right is on the watch list

Start by deporting rats like that. Why on earth would you allow someone like that to remain in your country constantly under police scrutiny to protect the population. Get them back to where they came from!!!

Would there be a vaccine for that too?!

deport all the camels

How about Australia?

True, allowing a white supremacists to enter the country is bad enough but then he is allowed to buy fire arms. Then a Islamic extremists found with a attack plan is allowed to wonder around free. The police needed to be within arms length not 60 seconds away FFS.

OPINION: This headline is BULLSHIT. The offender was known to police, was being actively watched and was stopped, fatally, within 60 seconds of beginning the alleged carriage of a crime. Tell me of ANY attack that has been stopped as quickly.

NO, charging someone for future POTENTIAL offenses is NOT how the law works... you can talk all the bullshit you like, especially on line, the difference is that a SMALL minority will take that next step.

Since 911 they have all been Sunni, maybe if we could just stop Saudi Arabia and its butcher king arming and funding them, but that's complicated with them owning major oil and weapons industry shares. Most likely we will just keep paying taxes or this crime it's a new normal

ban all social media.

So the ABC sees fit for purpose to create and publish an opinion on New Zealand. Cripey.

No just don't say their names after the fact! It's works a treat.

Let me guess, they need a surveillance state? 🙄

At least the police knew about the guy and was able to stop him before he killed 51 people

Step 3. Enabling secular Muslims to challenge these interpretations at a grass roots level is the end game.

Step 1. There's a spectrum of interpretations of Islamic scripture, islamists and jihadists have a certain face-value, literalistic interpretation. Step 2. Understand that an afterlife story is dangerous as a dogma for jihadists.
