The growing COVID-19 outbreak across multiple New South Wales prisons has Kylie Hughes fearing for her son.Just 21 per cent of inmates in government-run jails have had two dosesThe 24-year-old Wiradjuri man is currently at the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre at Silverwater, where multiple positive patients are being treated."I'm terrified that he could catch it right now and he could die from it," Ms Hughes said.
Family members and human rights advocates fear growing COVID-19 case numbers in prisons and a lack of access to vaccinations inside is leaving prisoners 'like sitting ducks".Adding to Ms Hughes's concerns, her son has desperately asked to be vaccinated on four separate occasions — with no success."I've been told he was on the waitlist, but recently I was told there is no waitlist. It's whoever wants to be done will be done, but that hasn't happened.
As of last week, 21 per cent of NSW prisoners in government-run facilities had been fully vaccinated and 42 per cent had received at least one dose, according to a Justice Health spokesperson. Ms Hughes is concerned inmates do not have access to face masks or sanitisers and are required to 'COVID clean' their own cells.
