If allowed to remain in force, the new measures could signal the most dramatic restriction on abortion rights in the US since the high court's landmark Roe v Wade decision legalised abortion in 1973.

A Texas law banning most abortions in the state has taken effect, but the US Supreme Court has yet to act on an emergency appeal to put the law on hold.

Abortion providers who are asking the Supreme Court to step in said the law would rule out 85 per cent of abortions in Texas and force many clinics to close. Planned Parenthood is among the abortion providers which have stopped scheduling abortions beyond six weeks from conception. At least 12 other states have enacted bans on abortion early in pregnancy, but all have been blocked from going into effect.

In this Texas law, private citizens will be authorised to take legal action against abortion providers and anyone involved in facilitating abortionsTexas has long had some of the nation's toughest abortion restrictions.A sweeping law passed in 2013 that the Supreme Court eventually struck down forced the closure of more than half of the state's 40-plus abortion clinics.

Politicians also are moving forward in an ongoing special session in Texas with proposed new restrictions on the so-called morning-after pill which accounts for around 40 per cent of abortions in the US.

Good

Texas Taliban?

This will cost Republican lawmakers more as they'll have to send their mistresses out of state to get it done....

Texas really hates women don't they.

Kick them out of the Union, they want to act Undemocratic.

Controversial opinion: you can't be pro-choice and also pro-lockdown. Both issues are about protecting life above all else, despite the clear negative effects it has on many people. Supporting life in one case but not the other makes you a hypocrite

Seems like the Texas Taliban - uh, GQP, got a little closer to 'Shittier Law'. When are the burkas coming in

That is just disgusting. The more times I visited the US for work, the more I was appalled by the place. (admittedly the last 3 times were in Florida 🤨)

So called “Christians” are obsessed with bringing more unplanned children into a country where kids aren’t provided adequate healthcare, aren’t protected from gun violence, poverty or racism. Makes perfect sense.

They should ban abortion in every country! Abortion in murder!

Only degenerates abort.

When a Republican gets an abortion it's referred to as a 'medical procedure', but when a Democrat gets an abortion it's exactly that what Republicans call it. The pro-life party LMAO 🤣🤣, encouraging their members to die from COVID-19.

That will kill planned parenthood's business model. Guess idiots will now have use protection or use the morning after pill.

The Church can’t fuck kids without kids being born. Logical

Good

I support this law.

How are they expected to be able to neglect them as children, and place them at risk of Covid, guns and poverty if they are never born? 🤔

The more votes the Morrison/Joyce government gets, the closer Australia is to this regression. LNPFailWomen EnoughIsEnough

PatsKarvelas In the state the refuses to wear masks as they negatively impact on their freedoms. 😡

This is appalling. Abortion should be safe and legal. This would also make it rare.

Texas taliban

Disgusting a woman's body is her own...

Pro life* *but not if you have comorbidities.

Whose body is it?

This is the first step to overturning Roe V Wade.

PatsKarvelas JFC this is sickening.

Texas: We are against any COVID restrictions that will impact on people's civil liberties. Also in Texas: Civil Liberties don't exist unless you are a man.

6 weeks too many. Abortion is not healthcare.

Good... put some responsibility into 'that' act.

Texas doesnt want the government running their lives, just 'their women'. Disgusting.

Christanistan; religion is demonstrably negative for humanity.

Right Wing Americans once again trying to force big government into women's vaginas.

Banned for poor women. Rich women will simply travel out of the state. Do they really think this will improve everybody's lives?

This not abortion rights, this is about the FreedomToChoose!

😳😬

Based

Oh for heavens sake. How long is the US going to go back and forth on abortion?
