The Biden administration said Monday it will allow thousands of Afghans to resettle in the United States, citing the growing threat to civilians from a resurgent Taliban.

The White HouseAfghans who worked with the U.S. military during the 20-year U.S.-led war through a special visa program that involves strict requirements and vetting.

"The U.S. objective remains a peaceful, secure Afghanistan," the State Department said."However, in light of increased levels of Taliban violence, the U.S. government is working to provide certain Afghans, including those who worked with the United States, the opportunity for refugee resettlement to the United States."

President Joe Biden has said American troops will be out of the country by Aug. 31, bringing America's longest war to a close ahead of his initial Sept. 11 deadline. The Pentagon has said the U.S. withdraw is more than 90% complete. The Biden administration has come under intense pressure from lawmakers and human rights groups to help those Afghans who worked for the U.S. during the war.
