Staff at nursing homes in California are no longer prohibited from deliberately misgendering residents, a California district court ruled this month, saying the ban that was enshrined as part of a 2017 law was a violation of staffers' freedom of speech.
Equality California, a nonprofit that aims to protect LGBTQ Californians, and one of the sponsors of the legislation, said in a statement that the court's decision was"beyond disappointing, especially for transgender and nonbinary seniors."The Third District Court of Appeals overturned a part of the LGBTQ Long-term Care Facility Residents' Bill of Rights, passed in 2017, known as the"pronoun provision.
Another bad ruling. People's mental health should trump someone's freedom of speech. Sorry. Especially when elderly and vulnerable and at the end of their lives. Why subject them to more abuse
Stupid.
I support freedom of speech, but I also support freedom to find work elsewhere. If a person can’t be respectful to people, then they shouldn’t be involved with their care. I have a trans loved one, and this is literally their biggest fear—being mistreated in their later years.
So it violation my freedom of speech for then to stop calling people in nursing home children murderers?
It's amazingly sad how misguided and vile some of these comments are.
WTF?
CNN - not worried about Cuomo killing ppl in nursing homes. CNN - very worried that 5 ppl in nursing homes might be called a different pronoun.
'misgendering' / 'correctly sexing' 'Karen White / Stephen Wood'
Transgender patients should start misgendering staff who do misgender them and see how they like it. Except, of course, they can’t because they’re vulnerable and could be subject to retaliation.
