A 55-year-old man who blackmailed his daughter before raping and sexually abusing her over more than seven years, has been jailed for 17 years by the Central Criminal Court

David Masterson, 55, originally from Tallaght in west Dublin, pleaded guilty to six counts of rape, sexual assault and incest representing 30 offences carried out between March 2007 and June 2014.

When she told her father, expecting help, he told her she would have to do what the anonymous texter demanded. Mr Justice White said Masterson had pleaded guilty and had acknowledged at an early stage to gardaí that his daughter was telling the truth. He sentenced him to 18 years with the final year suspended to allow him to be assessed for a treatment programme.

Rape is one of the most evil crimes and the circumstances of this are particularly evil. I'd have no difficulty paying taxes in the knowledge a man like this would never ever be released from prison. I defy anyone to argue how he could ever be rehabilitated & safe for release.
