A Catholic priest of the Jesuit order, Father Stan Swamy devoted his life to defending the rights of India’s Indigenous peoples

are “undertrials” — prisoners awaiting trial. More than 100,000 undertrials have been held for more than a year without bail.

Obviously in failing health, the NIA refused to agree to bail for medical reasons. Only when Fr. Swamy was infected with COVID-19 while in prison did the court intervene and transfer him to a hospital. He died, still in custody, just over a month later. Fr.
