Land in and around the central west town of Bedourie, spanning to the Northern Territory border, is now recognised as Wangkamahdla country after a Federal Court decision.

It's been a six-year legal battle but native title rights have been won for more than three million hectares of land in outback Queensland.The Wangkamahdla people have won native title to three million hectares of outback Queensland

The native title will encompass seven cattle stations, one-fifth of the Munga-Thirri National Park and parts of the Simpson Desert, Cravens Peak and Ethabuka Nature Reserve. "Particularly with those pastoral companies, their interests will prevail over the native title if there is an inconsistency. But there's certainly a recognition of the Wangkamahdla people."Bedourie in central west Queensland has a population of just over 100 people.Her family had been involved with the native title claim before she was born, but she said this individual case had been in the courts since early 2016.

"It's unique that this year's NAIDOC is talking about healing country, and that's something that resonates with me for this determination."
