For 13 years, Britney Spears has lived within the confines of a legal mechanism typically used as a last resort for people who cannot care for themselves. And today her message was clear: she wants out.

It's difficult to describe what it's like to hear a beloved millennial icon, a millionaire, a mother of two, and a chart-topping recording artist tell a court she is not in control of her own life.

Supporters of Britney Spears, who have long insisted the singer was unhappy in the confines of her conservatorship, protested outside the LA court. When a John Doe appeared in the virtual hook-up's waiting room, the court clerk asked the unknown person to identify themselves. Some of the participants, including Spears's court-appointed lawyer Samuel Ingham, were visible on the screen to those in the court.

Talking so fast Judge Brenda Penny had to twice ask her to slow down, the 39-year-old detailed an arrangement she said was abusive and exploitative. She said she wanted it to end."Ma'am, I’m not here to be anyone's slave." Britney Spears wants out of an arrangement put in place in 2008 after she was twice admitted to hospital for psychiatric care during a bitter custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline.During her testimony, Spears told the judge she did not speak out because she was embarrassed and demoralised by her predicament. After Spears's mental health crisis in 2007, many assumed the conservatorship was in the singer's best interest.

Only the fans who grew up dancing to her songs and tearfully demanding the world "leave Britney alone" insisted something was amiss.that she was crying out for help, and held rallies outside court hearings demanding the judge "free Britney".

It is nice for ABC to advocate for Britney Spears. If only they had balls to do the same for Julian Assange.

Guaranteed the “boy friend” will do exactly what Ferderline did, and take most of her $.

Headline objectors - I got an insight into something I’ve never experienced before. A mega-celeb exposing her vulnerability, pain & what I see as abuse - knowingly & deliberately. One conservator wanted hearing closed; Britney asked for a public hearing-she asked for *this* story

How is his level of control even legal? So WHAT if she blows all her $. It’s hers - don’t see dad on stage making $. Like every other dad - he can offer advice & suck it up if she doesn’t take it. Whoowhee. It’s not Britney with the “control” issues, friends.FreeBritney

We can’t choose the family into which we are born into but we can damn choose to have nothing to do with them!

I hope she wins. One breakdown shouldn't mean someone can control your life forever.

What a 🐂💩, classist, trashy headline. Thanks Ita.

I thought slavery was abolished in USA How can anyone be signed over to someone else,
