“The committee was very keen to, if possible, find an Indigenous candidate,” Campbell told the House of Commons justice committee on Tuesday. But she said there is “still the challenge of language.”Article content
The Liberal government has committed to only appointing functionally bilingual judges to the Supreme Court, and just last week it introduced legislation called Bill C-32 that would enshrine this requirement as law. Campbell said she believes the courts are doing better when it comes to diversity, and that includes bringing more Indigenous people into the judiciary. Having now chaired the advisory board for the past four Supreme Court justice nominations, Campbell said she’s seen more Indigenous people coming forward with applications.Article content
“I’ve done that, appointing Indigenous justices to the superior courts and elevating currently-sitting superior court judges to the courts of appeal,” Lametti said. “It’s a priority for us as well to make sure that that representation, at its earliest possible point, also extends to the Supreme Court of Canada.”
They should make accommodations for Canada’s First Nations judges. They all speak at least one of the official languages. Break down these barriers!!
More TRUE Liberal racism.
Put people in these positions based on their qualifications. Why is this so hard for the left to fathom?
Why didn't she study the language? Is that so difficult? You know that you're in line for a position like that and one of the requirements is that you're bilingual. Is it too much trouble to take classes, read? What got in the way? Zumba?
The top court should have a mandatory appointed Indigenous judge and fuck the bilingualism requirement. That is just plain discrimination!
Their are Indigenous Languages courses available for all top judge candidates. No need to be trilingual.
There are french lessons available
Ha Ha the Nation of Quebec rules!
My question is why are the only official languages of Canada the languages of the colonizers? If reconciliation was a real thing wouldn't indigineous languages be included?
Wow…it makes it difficult for all Canadians who do not speak English and French. Heck so does a law degree?
Get with the times and use Google translate and stop limiting Canadian talent of elected offices only to french speakers - an old idea that is outdated and no longer represents the language diversity of Canada. This is holding Canada back from greatness.
Under the category of 🐂💩
Well it actually disqualifies 87 percent of the Canadian population, most Canadians don’t realize they are ruled by a small cadre of people drawn from a mere 13 percent of the population who are fluently bilingual, this is a disgrace.
With some of the decisions from the court we need many more new judges
government officials of any kind have all been required to speak French. been this way a long time. if the honorable judge doesn't, then clearly she's not qualified for the job. nothing to do with her heritage but course National Post will make something of it. smh.
The PM is like blah blah…we have an election to win.
