Gardaí to 'use discretion' after warning that alcohol licences do not cover on-street service by pubs and restaurants

Image: Shutterstock/Lautaro Soto Image: Shutterstock/Lautaro Soto GARDAÍ HAVE WARNED that alcohol licences are not valid for areas outside pubs and restaurants for which they were originally sought – such as new on-street dining sections.

A number of local authorities have closed off streets or narrowed access to vehicular traffic in urban areas in order to allow venues to provide a more extensive outdoor service, with indoor hospitality not expected to return until next month. In a statement this evening, a Garda spokesperson said that alcohol licences did not apply to on-street areas if a venue had not originally applied to serve alcohol there.

“The licensee is licensed to sell intoxicating liquor to a person to consume the alcohol within that highlighted area only, any other sales are on a take away basis only.”

Use their discretion? So different rules from each place. Banana Republic

It honestly feels like the lunatics are now in full ownership of the madhouse. If wasn't so serious it would be hilarious. We just seem to want to become the laughing stock of the world. We don't need Paddy Irishman jokes anymore....just look at our Covid plans.

Can they not be advised to apply for occasional licences to address the matter...were there is a will there is a way.

Probably coz sum pubs had the neck to raise the price of the pint when they were allowed to open 5 60 in the temple bar Dorset st dublin is really taking the piss I wouldn't blame the guards for pointing out the law and b seeing doing there job

FFS give them a break. They are trying to earn a living, provide a service and create employment

That's even worse.

Same discretion they use for Moriarty and Mahon Tribunal findings. Wasters.

Cut them a bitta slack ... they can’t win

Garda discretion generally means Garda pick and choose who has access to the streets and who doesn't,

But they allowed takeaway pints to be drunk outside premises

If people become disruptive and act in a way that causes problems then gardainfo should intervene. Otherwise just allow people to run their businesses.

Some common sense needs to be used. Those businesses have had enough heartache. They’re trying to make a living for their families and themselves.

Gardai would want to use their discretion and deal with the scum that are terrorising the streets every night !!! civil-unrest

Police state. Leave people alone.

Go and arrest them, hassle them as you did with the aged in Churches. It is the Law, no discretion, enforce

Well that's a really, really terrible idea.
