Dublin's Capel Street and Parliament Street will be made traffic-free on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings for a trial period to support businesses and facilitate outdoor dining this summer, the city council has said.

From 6.30pm to 11.30pm on those weekend evenings from next Friday 11 June, the streets will be closed to traffic.

The council said that the trial will last six weeks, and will be assessed after that period. It follows a public consultation for pedestrianisation options for the street. This measure is in addition to the increased pedestrian space already created by build-outs on Capel Street, and the closure of Capel Street and Ryders Row which will be closed to vehicular traffic from 7am next Friday 11 June. There will be no disruption to Luas services, while access for local residents will be maintained, the council added.

DublinCommuters Are Capel Street and Parliament Street being pedestrianised to take all the people baton charged out of South William Street?

DublinCommuters Support businesses? How about supporting pedestrians? Believe it or not, a car free street can benefit everyone, even people using that street without spending money in a business on it. Almost like it's a requirement 🙄

What's the point in doing this when the gardai will just baton charge the crowd.

Excellent news

Paschald Temporary setup is fine. Dubco have already made a balls of traffic flow in the city. Any changes has to benefit everyone not just a minority. If everything ever get back to normal no changes should be made that makes the traffic flow worse than it already is.

Is this the total length of caple Street. From Bolton Street to the Quays?

To support a few pubs and restaurants... Wonder how all the restaurants and pubs not in a pedestrianised street feel?

They said it could never work on Henry Street, Grafton Street...but Dublin continuing to remove city traffic to make the city a better place for business and people leadership climate health environment

Muinchille They said it could never work on Henry Street. They said it could never work on Grafton street. And just look. Both bloomed. We need to roll this out all across the city Center. It’s time to remove the traffic and funnelling it all through the city Center. Make the city for ppl

Elizabe12218417 Holohan starts the car....

So shut down traffic all over Dublin so a few pubs can sell drink to people that will piss and shit all over the street. Thousands of cars in traffic jams creating heavy emissions because they are stopped how clever is that. Why can't these people drink in there local pubs.

Someone else for the scrotes to get drunk and piss everywhere

This is good news. I'm just amazed RTE haven't portrayed it as some horrific inconvenience on motorists (yet)

Bad move. It just gives the Scobies more space to go apeshit

They are making sh:t of the city centre. South Anne’s St now looks like a war zone every morning, after 300-400 have been drinking the night before outside Keoghs. They’ve been drinking there for the past 2 months... not a guard in sight typical
