Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has dodged the hot seat in Parliament over an irregularly awarded contract to Digital Vibes.Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize will not appear before Parliament’s Health Committee on Friday. He was set to respond to allegations that he benefitted from an irregular contract between the department and the company, Digital Vibes.
Buthelezi confirmed that he has been directly implicated in the criminal complaint laid at Cape Town Central Police Station on Thursday and as a result he has been legally advised to refrain from commenting on the probe. Meanwhile, African National Congress MP Tshilidzi Bethuel Munyai argued that the matter is sub judice and should not yet be discussed.
“The notion that somehow the laying of the charges is creating a limitation for the DG to account to this commission is not true. The sub judice rule is no reason for people to not account to the committee,” Gwarube lamented, insisting on engagement around the auditor-general’s report.By Wednesday, the SIU indicating that its investigation had reached a “critical” stage and is expected to be complete by month-end.
SIU head advocate Andy Mothibi told Scopa that investigators have been going through the procurement process that was conducted in the department.“The investigation is still ongoing. In respect of the aspects of the investigation, we have determined the accountability levels of who was involved in the actual procurement. The referrals will be made to the department,” Mothibi said.
Regarding what would happen next, he said the investigating teams were following legal provisions in the SIU Act and would call witnesses to be interviewed under oath.
