New Democrats are making a renewed push for the federal government to take concrete steps toward reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

In the House of Commons today, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is putting forward a motion that calls on Ottawa to drop a pair of Federal Court appeals he says represent a "belligerent" approach to justice for Indigenous children.

The demand comes as the country reels from the discovery of an unmarked grave holding what are believed to be the remains of 215 Indigenous children at a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C.Singh says symbolic gestures are not sufficient and that the moment demands action, accusing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of hypocrisy in sympathizing with Indigenous communities while fighting them in the courts.

The Liberal government is appealing a Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruling ordering Ottawa to pay $40,000 each to some 50,000 First Nations children separated from their families by a chronically underfunded child-welfare system. It is also fighting a tribunal decision that widened the applicability of Jordan's Principle, a rule stating that when governments disagree about who's responsible for providing services to First Nations children, they must help a child in need first and argue over the bills later.

It’s an NDP oppo day and their motion which MPs will be debating and at some point voting on, asks the House to call on the government to “cease its belligerent and litigious approach to justice for Indigenous children” & put up more $, supports.

If there is an investigation it should be into every home the church ran, Orphanages the lot.

The British Home Children were low class British kids sent to poor houses (residential work schools ) and farms in UK and CANADA to work in as slaves . many died . Most were mistreated . The world was a class system and low class were slaves like Oliver Twist stories

Legal battle, it is just another way to get free cash from the government. Yup waiting for the payout.

Hey theJagmeetSingh stop propping up your black/brown face buddy JustinTrudeau! Disgraceful

Anyone even think about going after those who were responsible for the tragic death of these children, if they can go after War criminals decades later then I would be investigating who was at the schools when children went missing! Holding those responsible is everyone's concern

theJagmeetSingh used the word hypocritical several times in his comments which is ironic considering how hypocritical he has been WRT his support for the Liberals he’s calling hypocritical cdnpoli

noticed these stories focus on the victimization of non white group (native ) , not caring that white children also went to residential schools and assuming all bodies native . Not caring children like the British home children were treated as badly

Don’t loose sight people. News trying to hide it. But this is the Vatican abd British monarchy that called for these murder.

The battle is about who should get how much. One day in a residential school compared to years, with abuse. Should the amount be the same?

Should ask them how they want this money spent, mental trauma care for residential school survivors and the search for undiscovered graves on former residential school grounds or a lump sum in their bank account.
