VicForests win appeal against Leadbeater’s Possum logging case

of local environment group Friends of Leadbeater’s possum, which argued VicForests had breached the federal Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act when it logged forest coupes in the Central Highlands region.

That precedent was overturned when Justice Debra Mortimer found in favour of Friends of Leadbeater’s possum,logging within an RFA area was subject to the act. She issued orders in August that barred VicForests from logging in 41 of the 66 Central Highland forest coupes that are covered by the Central Highlands RFA.

“Logging in native forests is killing threatened species and destroying their critical habitat,” he said. “This battle is not yet over.” Australian Forest Products Association chief executive Ross Hampton said the ruling showed state environment protections provide “all the necessary environmental protections” protections for threatened species.

micksfoley Bushfires aren't new in Australia, thinkimg that locking up forests & making it harder to access remote areas will protect them it won't. Most major fires are started by lightning

micksfoley Where are all the promised renewable trees? Why on earth are they allowed to cut down old growth forests? They are full of it. I don't know anyone outside the forestry industry that wants any of our remaining old growth slaughtered, esp after recent bushfires

micksfoley Appalled but not surprised. How hard is it to find a different tree to cut down - or to install hemp and bamboo plantations to provide an annual renewable supply of paper and timber materials? I guess destroying native habitat makes them feel powerful.
