As we approach Mother’s Day, it is nothing short of inspirational to see outstanding athletes on court while their children sit in the stands, writes Liz Ellis. | OPINION

I’m not going to lie. Four months after having my first child, a good day for me was keeping my baby fed, getting her to sleep for longer than 20 minutes at a time, and having a shower.

from her knee injury, and just over a year since her partner Brooke gave birth to their son Louis. Motherhood clearly agrees with her, as she hasn’t skipped a beat despite missing all of last season. These four Australian athletes, combined with international mums Jhaniele Fowler from West Coast Fever and Phumza Maweni from Sunshine Coast Lightning, means that mothers are playing in five Super Netball teams, a record for the national league in Australia.

That maternity leave is offered to players on contract as well as the fact that clubs cover the costs of a carer to travel with a player whose baby is under 12 months old or is still being breastfed is a welcome development in Australia’s No.1 sport for women. The next step will be clubs providing child care as these babies become toddlers and their mums continue their sporting careers.
