After Derek Chauvin’s murder conviction, three other former Minneapolis police officers face an uphill battle when they are tried this summer

in the death of George Floyd means an uphill battle for three other former Minneapolis police officers charged in the matter when they go to trial later this year, defense lawyers and legal authorities said.

Had Mr. Chauvin been acquitted, prosecutors would have struggled to convict the three others, and they might have dropped the case entirely, said Jon J. Lee, a criminal law professor at University of Minnesota Law School. Lawyers for the three former officers didn’t respond to requests for comment. They have argued in court that their clients didn’t conspire or intend to help Mr. Chauvin, and have filed motions claiming prosecutorial misconduct.

For prosecutors to secure a conviction of the three officers on the count of aiding or abetting second-degree murder, “all they have to prove is that they knew his actions were an assault—that they knew his actions were causing a bodily harm that was unlawful,” said Mr. Lee.
