Late Tuesday afternoon a Minneapolis jury found Chauvin guilty of murder and manslaughter for pinning Floyd to the pavement with his knee on the Black man's neck in a case that touched off worldwide protests, violence and a furious reexamination of racism and policing in the U.S.
Wheeler, who said he hoped that Chauvin would be found guilty on all charges, expects large gatherings Tuesday in the city, the site of sometimes violent gatherings following Floyd's death last May. While protests have continued regularly for nearly a year in Portland, tensions have been exacerbated following recent officer-involved shootings. Many protests in the city have been declared unlawful assemblies and riots and have ended with arrests, vandalism and fires.
Officials urged business on Tuesday to lock up their trash cans, dumpsters, outdoor seating and construction equipment -- "anything that can be used as a weapon or to start a fire" -- and to keep their lights and security cameras on.
Rioting works. It got them what they wanted. They will keep doing it and escalating demands. No reason for them to stop it nobody is going to stop them.
