The jury deciding the fate of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin have reached a verdict and will soon reveal their decision.

A notice posted on County court website read “A verdict has been reached and will be read between 3:30-4pm [local time]. Jurors deliberated for four hours on Monday and resumed deliberating this morning at 8am.” Mr Chauvin is facing three charges of second degree unintentional murder, third degree murder and second-degree manslaughter over the death of George Floyd last year. Protestors are beginning to gather outside the court complex as tensions come to a head over the anticipated verdict.

Businesses across the city have been boarded up and surrounding streets are seeing a strong National Guard presence over fears of potential violence. President Joe Biden weighed in on the trial – which was streamed to the country – revealing he called the Floyd family last night. He also pointed out he was only commenting because the jury was sequestered. “They’re a good family and they’re calling for peace, tranquility no matter what that verdict is,” Mr Biden said.
