The US supreme court on Monday declined to hear an appeal by the Infowars host, Trump ally and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who was fighting a Connecticut court sanction in a defamation lawsuit brought by relatives of some victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting.

Some Sandy Hook families immediately converted their loss into political messages about gun control. Their politicization of their personal tragedies makes those tragedies fair game in the political debate. When a democracy cannot debate facts, then it's no longer a democracy.
