Some CEOs might be reluctant to speak up about Georgia's new restrictive voting law or other political and social issues, concerned that it will an expensive undertaking. The good news is there is an affordable alternative: Business leaders can be their own corporate activists. Here's how.

Reach out to your local, state, and federal appointed and elected officials and request they keep you posted about the issues and topics they are working on that are important to your business. As appropriate, share your views on those matters. When you learn about upcoming hearings on those topics, provide your written or in-person/virtual testimony at those sessions.

Those relationships can be two way street: you may be able to assist the officials and their staff by offering to educate them about the impact those issues have on your company and industry.Tiscareño-Sato makes at least one phone call a month to Rep. Eric Swalwell, her local member of Congress in California and the state’s two U.S. Senators to support or oppose legislation that will impact Latinx families, military families, school districts, and veterans.

“There's no excuse for not calling your elected officials so they know your name and your position on legislation. CEOs must do this,” she advised.Tiscareño-Sato recommended that business leaders attend the town meetings of their elected leaders. “We are the leaders in our industry and communities. We must speak up. We must be known to our political leaders,” she counseled.

“Trust me when I tell you my Congressman knows my name. Why? Because I visit his office in D.C. just about every time I'm there on business.”There is strength in numbers. Create or join a coalition of like-minded CEOs to work on the issues you care about. If you are a member of a trade or professional organization, ask if they will support your advocacy efforts and how you can support theirs.
