U.S. church membership has fallen below 50% for the first time, according to a Gallup poll published Monday

Monday, continuing a decades-long decline in membership driven by growing numbers of Americans who express no religious affiliation. In 2020, 47% of Americans said they were a member of a church, synagogue or mosque, down from 50% in 2018 and 70% in 1999.

U.S. Church membership hovered around the 70% mark for 60 years since Gallup first started measuring it in 1937, though the figure has been in steady decline since the turn of the century. The trend coincides with growing numbers of Americans who don’t express a religious preference—which has grown from 8% in 1998-2000 to 21% in the last three years—as well as a drop in the number of religious Americans formally belonging to a church, which has fallen 13 points over the past 20 years to 60%.

Gallup’s research links declining membership with age, with 66% of people born before 1946 belonging to a church compared to 58% of baby boomers and 50% of Gen Xers. Just 36% of millennials told Gallup they belonged to a church, a similar number to the adults of Generation Z interviewed, though the pollsters acknowledged data for this group is limited. In spite of decreasing shares of Americans identifying as religious and growing numbers expressing no affiliation at all, the U.S. is still very much a religious nation. Gallupmore than seven in ten still aligned themselves with some kind of organized religion even if they did not hold a formal membership.

The American church is simply an extension of the republican partu, which is full of bigots.

Tax the right wing cult church’s.

There’s a lot of online church attendance.

Thank God! 🤪

You did look into all the zoom meets that have happened!

Only because they were not able to meet for over a year! Most churches followed the limited amount of members aloud to meet it completely closed! This is a nogus statement to their thought to stop churches! What a false statement

Since it’s not “one nation under God” anymore, this is not surprising. When the states start acting like Republics again this number that’s left will be non-existent. Christians wake up: Each of us is the church. Each one, preach one and live it on purpose. God is faithful.

Duh, churches were closed.

It's boring to sit at home alone, looking for someone to spend time with
