The decision of the Metro Manila mayors to bar minors outside their homes for two weeks to stem the spread of coronavirus may be considered an infringement of children's rights,” UNICEF said Friday in a statement.

While the UNICEF acknowledges the local governments' efforts to address the uptick in cases, it said infection control measures “should respond to the best interest of the child; should not cause further harm; and should always consider the preservation of the child’s well-being and dignity.” UNICEF is a United Nations agency that promotes children's rights.

UNICEF noted the restrictions that dragged on for a year have been taking a toll on the mental health of young people. “They have been learning from home, often confronting incredibly challenging circumstances. For those experiencing violence, neglect, or abuse at home, lockdowns left them stranded with abusers and without the required support,” it added.

I wish this is fake news, otherwise, i'm losing respect for UNICEF. 😠

May I know if UNICEF has better ideas? Is it better to let the children go out in times of alarming surge of covid 19 positive?

Child abuse!

Lockdowns were just meant to be weeks or a few months. Hindi 1 year. This is so damaging to kids. Think of those living in small cramped spaces. Walang lugar para maglaro. Parang selda. I think that’s UNICEF’s point. No easy solution for this

Don’t focus on children, they’re not carrier. adults is the one.

Soooo do we infringe the rights of the children for 2 weeks or do we want dead children Hmm lemme think 🤔🤔🤔

Which is better to do to safeguard children or giving treis rights even this situation. You must think of it before.......

Considering the risks vs. Benefits. I think it's still better for filipino children to stay inside and play. This way, we can atleast help to minimise the spread of the virus.

Jezus Said let the children come to me before them is the Kingdom of heaven ... anyone who refuses this children wil Burn in HELL !! For eternity!!

While UNICEF may have a point, why speak only now? And you used “may be considered...”, you’re not really sure.

Haha!

UNICEF, are you going to shoulder their medical expenses in case (knock on wood) they get infected by the virus from playing/going outside?

That's true in normal times. But this is ABNORMAL times and NOT a permanent policy. This is to protect children. Is UNICEF saying let's expose children to the virus? Whoever made that statement doesn't think broadly enough.

wala nmn siguro problema. basta pagnagka covid ipagamot sila lahat ng UNICEF. agree unicefphils ?

May sayad ba tong unicef ha

Do you expect a child to follow strict protocols all the time? Tayo nga matatanda minsan we forget hindi sinasadya mahawakan mata natin outside, etc. What more isang bata, let's be realistic lang ha. NO!

UPDATE: MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos seeks understanding from UNICEF, adding that it is not their intention to violate children's rights but to 'protect' them 'considering the surge in cases in Metro Manila.'

We hear you, it’s just that it seems our govt failed big time, so very little choice but to go for drastic measures.

basic(health-life) against basic(rights-as individual) mamili ka. puro kau kwento na walang kwenta..

hmmm...trying to keep people, children in this case, is an infringement of their rights? am i hearing this right? UNICEF if children want to have/do something and it's not allowed, it's an infringement?why bar children from vaping/smoking? drink alcohol? it's their right!

Their parents know what is best for them. It seems UNICEF does not understand the gravity of the situation.

I also don’t agree with locking down kids and seniors. One can go outside and Stay safe. Now more than ever we should put a priority on staying active and keeping healthy and this can be done safely outside

Right to get the virus, you mean?

Dear UNICEF, what will the rights of children be when there are no children to enjoy them? Please, use common sense before issuing idiotic statements. The measure protects the children. Please, your brains aren’t supposed to be decorations.

OMG, UNICEF It's for their own good.

Don't worry about it.
