The government unlawfully failed to publish details of coronavirus-related contracts worth billions, the High Court has ruled

The judge said the obligation was a"vital public function" which was"no less important during a pandemic".

"This was important not only so that competitors of those awarded contracts could understand whether the obligations ... had been breached, but also so that oversight bodies such as the National Audit Office, as well as Parliament and the public, could scrutinise and ask questions about this expenditure.

However, the department's"historic failure" to comply with its obligations with regards to setting out details of contracts because of the pandemic was"an excuse, not a justification". "We have been working tirelessly to deliver what is needed to protect our health and social care staff throughout this pandemic, within very short timescales and against a background of unparalleled global demand," a spokeswoman said.

The Good Law Project said the judgment was a"victory for all of us concerned with proper governance and proof of the power of litigation to hold government to account".Jolyon Maugham QC, founder of the Good Law Project, has written to the health secretary and invited him to agree to publish the names of all firms given public contracts under a fast-track"VIP lane" and how much they were paid.

Dave_Emo_3 Corruption at the highest levels £billions missing...why arent the metropolitanpolice getting involved. Why are the opposition parties lawyers not getting involved? Why arent back bench conservatives getting involved?

So when do we start seeing people put in jail?

DrDomPimenta This should be the headlines on all MSM. Corrupt government. But no have to pick on Harry and Megan, if they Never left would be headlines every day, saying they are living off the public. Wills and Kate would be envious. They leave, make their own lives, public still not happy.

Hancock should have been prosecuted for dishing out PPE freely to all his 'Friends & Family' !! Still nothing will be done exactly like Patel when she was found guilty in her bullying allegations...

put him in jail then

The Tories just love Harry and Meghan. Even after the ruling the govt will find a way of not releasing the information. No accountability.

“When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men in a society, over the course of time they create for themselves a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it.” ― Frédéric Bastiat.. And an-economy to perpetuate their-own wealth and position..

Dear god... Not even asking for another party in charge the last election was free and fair but ffs the Tories need to remove Johnson and replace him with someone more competent

Can we stop saying 'acted unlawfully' the term is broke the law or acted criminally. The next step would be to inform the police, have the accused arrested and charged and for the CPS to decide whether there is a case to answer and they should prosecute. What's stopping them?

Don't worry, good ole joe public will pay that money back in massively increased taxes.

This pandemic has really expose how corruption is really endemic in the UK government, not only developing countries...
