Facebook's head of policy in the Asia-Pacific argues it was the government's proposed law — and not a failure to test their algorithm — that pushed them to "inadvertently" block emergency services pages during bushfire season.
"One of the criticisms we had about the law that was passed by the House of Representatives yesterday is that the definition of news is incredibly broad and vague." The government has proposed the law to force companies like Google and Facebook to negotiate with media companies. They are designed to ensure these media companies are fairly remunerated for the use of their content on search engines and social media platforms.
"These actions will only confirm the concerns that an increasing number of countries are expressing about the behaviour of big tech companies who think they are bigger than governments and that the rules should not apply to them."Communications Minister Paul Fletcher disagrees with Facebook's complaint related to the definition of "news" in the law but has offered to work through the "misunderstanding".
The irony that a lnp & ipa govt want to control & tax a private multinational to ensure their own conflict of interest multinational mate makes more money & abcnews & aust people sucked into the scam SkyNewsAust skynews auspol Facebook
Hmm seems like the ABC is borrowing the editorial line from NewsCorp (emph added): 'They are designed to ensure these media companies are FAIRLY remunerated for the use of their content on search engines and social media platforms.'
I run a small news and information site. I employ 2 people. Get around 2k hits a day. can I get $? Of course not....only Rupert! The liberal govt is so corrupt
So tired of Facebook dominance, poor journalism and news articles written to encourage click baits. I hope there is a shift to better fund journalism by going directly to the publishers for quality content.
The more I see this, the more obvious the similarities to Chinese Communist Party are. Every shred of power that Facebook wields is given to them by users who want things that are ‘cheap’ or ‘free.’ A kind of balance of trade situation , & FB are now flexing to show who’s boss.

Facebook pays little or no tax in Australia - they can piss-off. Australians will adapt to cope without FB
I’ve never seen anything in real life more resembling a Bond villain than this interview
This will destroy Murdoch media. A small price to pay to rid Australia of Murdoch media
Good on you facebook, our liberal government trying to get more money for Rupert Murdoch is just wrong.
TRUE
ABC too busy whining about FB to cover real news
Aussies should show their sense of national pride and unite to BLOCKADE FACEBOOK! BOYCOTT ADVERTISERS! TWITTER is so much better! LNP should not be negotiating with this FACEBOOK TERRORIST! SCOMO IS A FACEBOOK MONKEY! RETWEET ME!
We should not give in to this.
Facebook have just proven they control the information people see. People should be terrified at what they are doing now, and what they may do in the future without anyone’s knowledge.
Use real websites
