An Alabama death row inmate won a reprieve from a scheduled lethal injection after the U.S. Supreme Court said the state could not proceed without his pastor present.

ATMORE, Ala. -- An Alabama inmate on Thursday won a reprieve from a scheduled lethal injection after the U.S. Supreme Court said the state must allow his personal pastor in the death chamber.

“Alabama has not carried its burden of showing that the exclusion of all clergy members from the execution chamber is necessary to ensure prison security. So the State cannot now execute Smith without his pastor present, to ease what Smith calls the ‘transition between the worlds of the living and the dead.’” Kagan wrote. Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined with three liberal justices to let the ruling stand.

Smith, 51, had been scheduled to receive a lethal injection at a south Alabama prison for the 1991 murder of 22-year-old Sharma Ruth Johnson in Birmingham. In the past, Alabama routinely put a Christian prison chaplain, who was employed by the state, in the execution chamber to pray with an inmate if requested. The state stopped that practice after a Muslim inmate asked to have an imam present. The prison system, which did not have Muslim cleric on staff, said non-prison staff would not be allowed in the chamber.

STOP ALABAMA from killing him. It's clear in his photo that he's mentally challenged & the article confirms it. His IQ is too low to have understood what he did at the time. He has served 29 yrs. He got death bc he's black & he killed a COP'S daughter in the South. HelpHim

But the recently executed Muslim was not afforded the same privilege.

May God bless you and may He forgive you for all of your sins may you show mercy on your soul

Good, now the pastor/s should keep delaying it everyday 🤣🤣😘

Free all the black men that are innocent in this crooked system

why are we even still doing capital punishment, its so archaic and authoritarian. What business does the state have to decide if my life can be ended as a punishment determined by a judge? its just a waste of time and resources. fuck alabama.

It’s horrifying that we berate other countries for human rights abuses, and yet put people on death row in this country.

So one guy who was sick with COVID-19 which likely meant the lethal injection execution would make his death EXTREMELY PAINFUL was DENIED, and executed as planned. BUT OH WAIT. THIS GUY DOESN'T HAVE HIS MAGIC SKY GOD FRIEND ADVISOR. HOLD THAT SHIT UP!!! BREAK. BREAK. STOP!!

kuku27 Pastor must be down with Covid, what he keeps lying, this guy will be free

technicalities, just get it done if thats all the hold up is.

Alabama cancels execution after Supreme Court ruling requiring pastorAlabama inmate wins a reprieve from a scheduled lethal injection after the U.S. Supreme Court said the state must allow his personal pastor in the death chamber. Did he allow a pastor when he took his victim to a graveyard and shot her? Hopefully they reschedule the execution of this beast post-haste, with a pastor if he wants. God won't save him. It’s about time we abolish death penalty in America. That doesn't do anything good but if he wants it so be it

Amy Coney Barrett Joins Liberals and a Mystery Justice to Block ExecutionThe Supreme Court put off an execution on religious liberty grounds. But we don’t know who cast the fifth vote. The decision suggests that Barrett may apply principles of religious liberty more consistently than some of her conservative colleagues, even when doing so leads to a result favored by progressives and opposed by conservatives... unknown who cast the fifth vote to halt execution. Exodus 20:13 - Thou shalt not kill. The people who are supporting execution will burn in Satan's inferno. Millions of Republicans will burn in Satan's inferno. Act like nothing's wrong.

Supreme Court rules Alabama may not execute inmate without his pastor present in the chamberThe Supreme Court on Thursday blocked the execution of an Alabama inmate, Willie B. Smith III, who said he wanted his spiritual adviser present in the execution chamber. What a great win for the court! Happy for this man! His victim didn't get to have her pastor in the room before Willie Smith murdered her with a shotgun. He should die alone just like the woman he murdered. Welcome to the community, new Bitcoiners.
