She noted the rioters tagged Mr. Trump in Tweets and other social media posts, and repeated his posts. “Folks, this was not a hidden crime,” she said. “The president told them to be there so they actually believed they would face no punishment.” “Let’s call Trump. Yes, dude, let’s tell Trump what’s up. ...He’ll be happy. ...We’re fighting for Trump!” a rioter said in another video played by Ms. Degette.
Ms. DeGette added that when it became clear that Mr. Trump was not going to save the rioters from prosecution, “some of these supporters even expressed regret and said they felt duped.”House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at the Capitol on Thursday.House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that Senate Republicans were being “a little disingenuous” in their claims that holding the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump was unconstitutional because they delayed its start.
“There has never been any chance that any fair or appropriate trial would conclude before President-elect Biden is sworn in. Whether it were to begin this week, next week, or later, the trial will not end until after the President has left office,” Mr. McConnell wrote at the time in a note to Senate Republicans.
Mr. Lee called for the statements to be stricken from the record, and after a brief back-and-forth between Democrats and a confused-seeming Sen. Patrick Leahy , who is presiding over the trial, Rep. Jamie Raskin said he would withdraw the evidence—at least for now.
