Leading youth justice advocates, including a former royal commissioner, slam Queensland's crackdown on youth crime, warning the 'knee-jerk' measures will fail and push children 'further to the margins'.

Leading youth justice advocates, including a former royal commissioner, have slammed Queensland's crackdown on youth crime, warning the "knee-jerk" measures will fail to reduce rates of offending and instead push children "further to the margins".

"In the experience I've had, you're not going to punish kids into doing the right thing," Mr Gooda said. "What we need is support services operating at the times when they need it — not when an organisation or government thinks they need it." Ms Kilroy said the crackdown would help cement a cycle of traumatised children who will be pipelined into adult prisons.

She said police were only interested in "hardcore recidivists" who needed to be "constrained differently".

Social inequality creates social dysfunction.

What an absolute load of shit. The youth in Queensland have absolutely no fear of consequences because there's none. The government's done nothing to tackle rising rates of youth crime and it's only getting worse. Before saying punishment doesn't work, try actually punishing them

Bullshit. If kids still got the cane there would be half the issue solved. Actions have consequences. We are seeing now what happens when the consequences are not in place.

Punishment alone is a proven failure, but they keep doing it. Support, education & counseling. That works & it’s much cheaper in the end.

Sorry Mick, Given the catastrophic demise of The NT’s social fabric, and the unrelenting siege that the majority of our citizens now face as a result of the RC, maybe you should stand by and let us whom have to live with your ideas, solve our own problems.

'Former royal commissioner'....pfft...

At present in Townsville there are no consequences. As a high teacher of 40 years I know when young people are given clear boundaries and know the consequences and are sure that they will be followed through then they will follow the rules. Sorry, it’s not hard. Ask a teacher.

Wanna bet!!! That’s how most of us were raised & are better for it! Love & punishment in balance.

Also if they have a solution to the problem, why the fuck are they just crawling out of the woodwork now. Be suddenly someone one wants to take the long handle to the little shits and teach them a real lesson. Too fucken late🤬

Out of the wood work comes the problem with tackling any problems to do with youths and their constant reoffending.... The bleeding heart brigade of social workers, ex whatever and child psychologists. Cut them out of the conversation

So we should continue letting them run a riot stealing, vandalizing and killing with no justice or consequences. But then throw the book at anyone who tries to protect themselves and their property. A glaring double standard. At least if imprisoned the community is protected.

Wake up - kids do the wrong thing because they know there are no punishments = therefore they don't care and don't learn lessons. I am sick and tired of the hands-off softly softly position of lawmakers and the judiciary. Its the public that suffer - not the protected politicians

Bs

And if there are no rules and everyone can just go and do what they want then I bagsy jumping back into a fighter jet and this time giving it a fly - Top PM!

What’s the guy from Empire of the Sun doing talking about youth crime? Everyone knows that crime is a state issue, like COVID quarantine and everything else.

Two little shits just arrested for breaking into the girl`s house that got killed on her motorbike the other day. How the fuck, do you pricks keep defending the undefendable. when is enough enough? When your own kid is run down by a stolen car maybe?

Well what else then? There has to be consequences for their actions. Are they the untouchables? - everyone else is fair game.

And u can't let them go do what they want either

Tiger Mom says no.

Advocates should take all juvenile criminals home with them.....

I do love the continuous the solution offered isn't suitable, but never provide an answer or solution themselves. We need these people to actually do something not just tell us why something won't work

Because it’s SO much easier and cheaper to punish them than tackle the systemic issues which include trauma, mental health, family breakdowns and children in care.

I think the crackdown is great...if parents can't teach their kids respect, then the government will have to. Tough love is needed...

Typical of these people coming out now and saying the Government is over the top and they failed the kids blah blah. where are they with suggestions to address the problems or even address the poor victims of these juvenile crime? Nothing!!

No but you can show them Right from Wrong..... or does that fall into mental abuse.....

We've spent several fortunes on an excessively large number of disfunctional youth support agencies and still the high crime rates increase. We have to try something else.

“Law and order!”, screams the mayor, herself out on bail for killing someone!

PatsKarvelas Education is the desire to learn things, teaching is the desire to teach things, wisdom is the ability to know what's worth learning or teaching.

PatsKarvelas No you can't. But you also can't let innocent people have their lives ruined by using only cotton wool. It is a very difficult issue - the target is the minority of kids who just won't rehabilitate. We should not be waiting until they are 22 with over 200 offences to be punitive.

Send them out to pick fruit.

PatsKarvelas 1. You can for some. 2. People in custody can’t commit further offences against the community.

So the people saying you can punish kids please let them hurt or even kill someone from your family. Who are these idiots. These are not kids, they are humans out of control. People have to feel safe and while they are on the streets this won’t happen.

Mick, what a trite statement! Surely, parents have a role to care for their kids after school and ensure that their behaviour is socially acceptable in that time. Mick, should’nt the parents also be penalised when their kids commit crimes. Blaming others is an easy way out!

Education and funding helps. Good jobs for parents, Grandparents respected and Culture, language taught to politicians. Trickle down Responsibility.

The “kids” in the incident which sparked all this are adults. True, they are inferior specimens of sub-humanity. But they are not “kids”, okay?

The behaviour attributed to the accused parties in this report is sub-human...

They are out of control.

Yes you have to punish them until they respect the rules.Keep punishing them until they obey.

Listen to what the Premier and Townsville Mayor say. This is for the small percentage who are killing people walking along the street, like that young couple recently. and incorrigible. Programs dont work on them. Ankle bracelets are not punishment, theyre keeping others safe.

These 'advocates' probably haven't had their loved ones harmed.

These so called children are career criminals and need to be locked up so decent people can feel safe in their own homes and while going about their business, they are of no use to anyone and never will be.

Detached from reality. 60 cars a night stolen on the Gold Coast, with kids breaking into people's houses whilst they sleep and then posting on Instagram. These kids don't care as the soft QLD juvenile act and the soft magistrates won't hold them to account.

Ha ha rules made up by woke wankers who have never been the victim of a crime..... No fkn idea

It's got absolutely nothing to do with the society that has been created for us. It is definitely the youngsters.

It’s worked since the dawn of time

This proposal is abhorrent and thoughtless. And inherently racist. I couldn't believe my ears listening to Fran's interview on RN Breakfast just now.

What about the victims?

Well repetitively bailing them is working well isn’t it?

Don’t think people will do the right things by themselves especially teens. Everyone has his evil side. The only way to scare them off doing wrong thing is to set up tougher laws.

'We're coming down hard': Queensland passes contentious youth justice legislation in a bid to curb crimeQueensland's Parliament passes contentious new youth justice legislation that is set to become law in a bid to “crack down” on recidivist young offenders, despite concerns raised by advocates. Yeah sure Don’t call children “hardcore” they haven’t even established a national al personality or place in society and you’re saying they’ve got a hard core as per national values and rights; Infact these kids are eroding national values not out of arguement, but out of concession. Does AlboMP agree with this State initiative?
