A teen accused of deliberately driving into a crowd of people on New Year’s Day was in a car linked to a slain Melbourne underworld figure, a court has been told.

Luke Perry has been charged with reckless conduct endangering life, driving under the influence of drugs, drug possession and drug trafficking in relation to the incident on January 1.

Police were also concerned because he had links to “Middle Eastern organised crime figures”, the court was told. It is not disputed Mr Perry was behind the wheel but there were “triable issues” in the case, the lawyer said.Magistrate Marita Altman granted the teenager bail under strict conditions and said she was taking into account his age, the involvement of youth justice and delay.

The apprentice was also barred from using drugs, and his mother put up a $100,000 surety to secure his bail.
