Covid-19 Emergency does not infringe on human rights, says Sri Ram

Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram says the Emergency proclaimed on January 12 to contain the Covid-19 pandemic does not infringe on the fundamental rights of the people and is constitutional. — Picture by Yusof Mat Isa

“It may be challenged because fundamental rights, by their very description, are fundamental and form part of the basic structure of our constitution,” he said when contacted by Bernama today. Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah proclaimed the emergency, which will be enforced up to Aug 1 as a proactive measure to contain the worsening Covid-19 pandemic in Malaysia.
