A man who wrongfully spent 20 years in prison for killing a teenager has been cleared of her murder following a high-profile court case in South Korea that exposed police torture and investigation failures.

Yoon Seong-yeo -- now in his 50s -- was found not guilty Thursday following a retrial in the northwestern city of Suwon over the 1988 rape and murder of a 13-year-old in her bedroom in Hwaseong, then a rural, undeveloped area near the country's capital Seoul. The teenager was one of 10 killed in the area between 1986 and 1991 in a spate of high-profile deaths known as the Hwaseong murders. Yoon was the only person ever convicted in connection to the killings.

"We bow down and apologize to all victims of the crimes of Lee Chun-jae, families of victims, and victims of police investigations, including Yoon," Bae said, noting others had suffered from"police malpractice" during the initial Hwaseong investigation.According to Lee Soo-jung, a forensic psychology professor at Kyonggi University, it was common in the 1980s for suspected criminals in South Korea to be kept awake for long periods to extract a confession.

Really unfair. This poor investigation processes on the side of the police is really not encouraging.

They could use a little of that good judgement up there.

It's heartbreaking to read these type of stories. To have lost your best years due to negligent - that must be hard to live with & accept. I so feel for that person.

Yall think prison in America is bad... trust me... over seas, they torture you daily and no one can help

Hi. I see you wrote 'South Korea' but did you know that Koreans don't really like it when you specify 'South' when it's not totally necessary to what you're saying? It's a painful and unwelcome reminder of our divided country. Please consider this in the future. 감사합니다!

Investigation gone wrong!!!...that's why we have to put God first in whatever thing we do,i think this is the worst thing that can ever happen to a man

Now do the USA.

Do you believe present Korean government and police?

I hate it when i hear about being wrongfully accused, imagine spending 20 years for something you didnt do...

hmmmmmmmmm if people say the world has nothing to offer people will argue or if people say man leadership is a failure, people will still argue

If this happened in China, I think there would be a lot of comment

Same case happening in my country right now...question is 'How can one recover from this wrongful detention? How?

The one positive take away with this is good thing there´s no death penalty. Can´t say the same for the wrongfully accused and murdered individuals in the US.

Does this make people feel better? This happened in a foreign country! Ugh!

The justice system worldwide is an abhorrent epic failure! Pure evil! This man’s life will never be the same! Disgusting!

Wtf!
