Popular photographer, Kelechi Amadi-Obi, tells MOBOLA SADIQ why he opted for photography instead of law, the intricacies of the profession and other issuesLaw is the rule of engagement for any society and everyone must know the law, because ignorance is not an excuse. Because of my interest in art, I became more interested in copyright and intellectual property. However, it was not that I started practising law, I just took note of it more because I could relate it to my profession.

I have practised art now for over 30 years and at a certain stage in life, one has to unburden oneself because one needs to go to the grave empty. I’m at that stage where I have to let go of the knowledge I have acquired because that is the only way society can grow. We grow by passing on wisdom to the younger ones. The more one gives, the more one gets and that keeps one in the master position. Once one becomes a teacher, one is compelled to learn; otherwise, one would have nothing to teach.

Technology has affected the profession in a positive way. It has helped people to understand what it takes to be a photographer. People now appreciate what it takes to make images look extraordinary. They have seen the importance of carrying a good camera, looking for a perfect angle and light to create extraordinary images. People now see the importance of a creative eye because one’s phone would not think of an idea, concept or other elements.
