THE SUPREME COURT has in recent years gained an almost mythical status in American politics. With its extraordinary power—justices are appointed for life and have the final say on the meaning of the constitution, the supreme law of the land—politicians and activists alike view a nomination for the bench as the ultimate political accomplishment.
Ms Barrett’s Senate confirmation hearings began on October 12th with Americans sharply divided over her nomination. According to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, a pollster, a large majority of Republicans want her confirmed, but only a tiny fraction of Democrats agree. Overall, more Americans oppose Ms Barrett’s confirmation than support it .
This disapproval may have little to do with Ms Barrett herself. According to a recent survey by YouGov, another pollster, just 37% of Americans support filling Justice Ginsburg’s seat this year, compared with 42% who would favour waiting until after the election. The worry among Democrats is that if Ms Barrett is successfully confirmed, creating a 6-3 conservative majority on the bench, many of the court’s landmark decisions will be swiftly overturned. This concern is shared by many across the political spectrum. According to YouGov’s poll, a majority of voters oppose the Supreme Court striking down, the ruling from 1973 that recognised the right to abortion .
Most previous nominees for the Supreme Court have sailed through the process rather uneventfully. Ms Barrett may be headed for stormy waters.
you should overlay the polarization of politics due to SocialDilemma_ to your chart. Pretty much explains everything.
GeneCarella Thank God we aren’t governed by polls
Isn’t it interesting how court nominees has decreased in popularity with time. I understand that starting with Ginsburg is part of the political theater. Unfortunately, the confirmation process has become pure theater as well. There is no substance.
Lies from globalists
So what I’m seeing here is that a majority of Americans support the seat being filled by the current administration, no?
🤣🤣🤣 No one believes you anymore.
Fake bull💩☝️...
No shit. It’s all politics, nothing else. Libertarian
And, the saddest part is that it’s all due to Trump and the Republican Senate lock steppers more so than her as a person.
aditinfinite GOP realDonaldTrump dying by the sword. Good riddance!
And when owns the economist? They don't call it the Rothschild Rag for nothing. ✌️🐸
there are no polls. I do not believe that the Economist conducted a poll.
Too bad for you it's not a popularity contest.
How about your heading tie that declining approval trend to what it shows, as time has progressed approval has declined in step and is likely not tied to any particular judge but growing pessimism, disillusionment, or other among the population.
More lies from the MSM!
this is a joke. this magazine is a liar
Lower than Brett Kavanaugh? That's hard to imagine.
Econmist might be more respected if it wasn’t so bias.
With an all DemocRAT sample!! STOP YOU FOOLS WITH THE BOGUS POLLS!!!
neeratanden ACB hadn’t been a judge at all before put on 7th Circuit. She’s only been on that court for 3yrs. The judge she replaced on 7th Ct (Tinder) spent 20 yrs as a trial judge BEFORE Bush put him on the 7th circuit. And now...she’s gonna be a SC justice?
Fake
neeratanden Which I why these people should not get lifetime terms. It’s clear Scalia is an angry white man clinging to the 50’s, Kavanaugh wants beer and for his victimsto forget, and Thomas can’t seem to speak up until making it clear he wants to end marriage equality.
Dems faked the sexual accuse against Kavanaugh, did they apologized? Who cares about approval rate?
SenToomey don’t approve AmyComeyBarrett. You are supposed to represent your constituents!
Worse than the alleged mass rapist Brett Kavanaugh?
Election candidates take notes! We WILL hold it against you if you don’t block Amy Coney Barrett!
Fuuuuuuuuuuuck you and your cookie policies.
SenateGOP making a HUGE mistake, ignoring the will of the Am people to ram this thru. SendLindseyHome VoteThemAllOut GOPHypocrisy ConfirmationHearing
Great news... the Economist doesn’t matter or have a Vote
Must be Honest
Encuesta a modo por supuesto todos contra realDonaldTrump
republicans under trump are losing the majority of voters for generations. They were already in a weak position, this will cement their slide into the party of extreme conservatism and supporters of hate groups, xenophobia, and conspiracies.
So six of nine will be Catholics, in a largely Protestant country. Doesn’t seem very representative AmyConeyBarrettSCOTUS
Looks like “The Economist Sucks” Like it’s counterpart “CNN Sucks”
Ot would not matter if 70 or even 80% opposed her nomination. The Republican Party, specifically McConnell and his supporters intend to steal control of the judicial branch because they could not win a fair or even somewhat fair election.
News flash for the Economist, the United States does not govern by polls ... we are a Republic despite Great Britain’s best efforts (twice).
This poll has absolutely no bearing on the hearing. The people who were actually elected in free and fair polls will decide the outcome, not some partisan, media-driven, leftwing counting of heads.
Well, it’s a good thing we have a Constitution and don’t depend on polling.
If you love the Constitution, and not socialism you will support Amy nomination. We must have 9 Supreme Court Judges, because Democrats cried about having mail in ballots . If there is a problem now because of problems the Democrats made, 8 could make it a tie, 9 there can’t be.
Americans call themselves as being free but they are shackled clearly in their minds that Constitution cannot be amended. Something that was written 200 years back is still somehow relevant and cannot be changed as per current environment is preposterous for a democratic country
中囻的棺霉也擅長代表民意 邪惡的相同之處
The drop in approval ratings corresponds with the increase in the politicization of the court.
Republican & against it
I saw a poll that was 56% to 42 in favor of her appointment. She’s already nominated, seems like your poll is out of date.
Who cares. She’s in it’s done. They don’t care about polls.
She is a little fascist
Imagine having the bare-faced spite and audacity in this day and age to tell women what they can and cannot do with their own private and personal sexual and reproductive health. SupremeCourt ConfirmationHearing RoevWade Freedom
