WASHINGTON—The Republicans will move closer to expanding the conservative majority on the Supreme Court this week when the Senate holds confirmation hearings for Judge Amy Coney Barrett less than a month before the presidential election.four days of hearings starting Monday
, though two Republicans on the 22-member panel have tested positive for the coronavirus and can’t attend the first day of hearings in person. The goal is to have Judge Barrett confirmed by the full Senate during the last week in October, a schedule that could boost turnout in the period through Election Day, which is Nov. 3.
“If we have to go in and vote, I’ve already told leadership I’ll go in a moon suit,” Sen. Ron Johnson , who has tested positive for the virus, told a Denver radio station last week. “Where there’s a will there’s a way.” The hearings hold risks for both parties coming so close to an election. They are expected to renew attention to longstanding fights over abortion rights, health care, gun rights and the government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
The prospect of a ruling against abortion rights, for example, could cut both partisan ways. It could energize evangelicals who support Republicans while alienating suburban women who helped give the Democrats the House majority in 2018.
This Supreme Court is a sham. It does not represent the diversity of America. It’s mostly White, Male, Privileged, Republican, Catholics that belong to the Federalist Society. Disheartening to be here in the 21st Century. I hope there is a huge backlash.
