PETALING JAYA: Stiffer penalties should be imposed to check recurring river pollution affecting the right of people to access clean water, said the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam).

The Commission repeated its call for effective law enforcement, saying that the pollution episodes in Sungai Semenyih and Sungai Gong within a space of less than a month reflected the seriousness of the problem.

Suhakam added that the Selangor government was considering amendments to the Selangor Water Management Authority Enactment 1999 to increase the penalty for water pollution.
