, all of them men, have lain in state at the Capitol, most of them presidents, congressmen or military leaders. The first was Henry Clay, the Kentucky senator who died while still in office in 1852. The second was President Abraham Lincoln, after his assassination in 1865. Ginsburg will also be only the second Supreme Court justice to lie in state at the Capitol, after William Howard Taft, who had also served as president, in 1930.
One other woman has been given a similar tribute – Rosa Parks, upon her death in 2005 – but she lay “in honor” at the Capitol, a separate designation given to prominent private citizens. And Ginsburg will break yet another barrier with Friday's ceremony, to be held at the National Statuary Hall in the Capitol.
Justice Ginsburg's coffin will be placed on the Lincoln Catafalque, which has been loaned to the court by the U.S. Congress for the ceremony. The public viewing will take place from approximately 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Thursday. Ginsburg’s former law clerks will serve as honorary pallbearers and will line the front steps as the casket arrives. Supreme Court police officers will serve as pallbearers.
