Editorial: The possible overturning of Roe vs Wade is only the most obvious of a broad range of progressive causes that could suffer setbacks

The US Supreme Court is a very different institution to our own High Court, having been the stage for many of America's most contentious and hard-fought battles over racial and gender equality, abortion, gun laws, campaign funding and LGBTQI rights.

That is why the political battle over who will pick the nominee to fill the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg is such a momentous moment for America. Before her passing, the composition of the nine-member US Supreme Court was finely balanced with four clear voices on the political left – including Ms Ginsburg – four on the right, and Chief Justice John Roberts, who despite his conservative leanings was a deciding vote in recent years in support of abortion, gay rights, immigration and health care.

If US President Donald Trump were to appoint Ms Ginsburg's replacement, his third since coming into office, it would tip the court decisively to the right. With the backing of the Republican-controlled Senate, which has the final say on Supreme Court appointments, he is within reach of enshrining lasting change that would endure long past his days in the presidency.

and tantalisingly close to changing the make-up of the Supreme Court like few before him, that is not a request Mr Trump was ever going to grant. Our weekly newsletter will deliver expert analysis of the race to the White House from our US correspondent Matthew Knott. Sign up for

Let’s hope so; the late term abortion laws in some States are absolutely wicked.

Trump says he'll likely announce his US Supreme Court pick on 'Friday or Saturday,' after services for Ruth Bader Ginsburg. He says on Fox News that in 'all due respect' that 'we should wait until the services are over.'

Sadly America's (more) fucked and we must all get along without them as best we can. It's like living with granny in dementia care

“Suffer set backs” “SUFFER SET BACKS” ... a billion woman weep.

President trump should nominate justice of super court soon

Yes. The murder of children is the asterisk of our times

How RBG's death could shift the US Supreme Court - and American life - rightwardThe death of liberal US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has huge implications for the future of law and life in the United States, giving Republican President Donald Trump the chance to cement a 6-3 conservative majority on the court. Wrong Imagine a country where it was illegal for a mother to murder their baby who sleeps innocently in their womb. Yeah the horror! The left are such ideological supremacists, and so absolute in their self-righteous convictions that they literally feel ordained to be the only axis of political conversation. This is a dangerous time . Polarized extremism is being normalized.

This is why the fight over the Supreme Court could make the US presidential election even nastierThe potential replacement of the progressive Ruth Bader Ginsburg by a conservative judge could have generational implications for issues like affordable health care and access to abortion. Which just shows how messed up the US is. Justice and Law are supposed to be just that. America has turned justice and law into a partisan issue. They are stuck in the dark ages and it'll be a generation before they emerge from it. Time for the world to turn away from the US. Well, fuck. Why do leftwits always need to bracket 'affordable health care' (or some other universally approved policy) with 'abortion?' Abortion is murder. Democrats want it right up to birth. No, I'm not religious. I just think killing babies is wrong.
