A Children's Court hears that on the day Abbey Forrest was killed, the driver of the ute she was in was doing donuts and driving at speed along salt flats in northern Western Australia.

A 12-year-old boy who was behind the wheel in a fatal crash in Western Australia's far north has been sentenced to an eight-month intensive youth supervision order.The boy was behind the wheel doing donuts and slides when the ute rolled and killed Abbey Forrest last year

The Kununurra Children's Court was told the boy, who can't be named for legal reasons, was doing donuts and driving at speed along salt flats in Wyndham last year with four other children.The boy was first charged with manslaughter after a lengthy investigation by major-crash detectives, but he later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of dangerous driving causing death.A mural of Abbey Forrest in Wyndham, commissioned and painted last year as a memorial.

"What happened in this case was well across the boundary as appropriate risk taking for children," he said. Judge Quail said the boy needed support from his family and said it was important he continued to receive trauma counselling.
