The former vice-president rejected the idea of releasing the names of potential nominees, saying that doing so, as Mr Trump has done, could improperly influence those candidates' decisions in their current court roles as well as subject them to "unrelenting political attacks".
Among the speakers was Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren who eulogised Justice Ginsburg as "an icon, a trailblazer and a friend" and accused Republican Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell of seeking to cynically hijack the confirmation process. The death of Justice Ginsburg means there are now only three judges appointed by Democratic presidents on the current Supreme Court.
"I did not support taking up a nomination eight months before the 2016 election to fill the vacancy created by the passing of Justice Scalia," Ms Murkowski said in a statement.
